Dear Delegates,
Hello and welcome to DUMUNC 39! On this page, you can find a description of the forms of committees that DUMUNC will offer this spring. In determining these categories, we have sought to cover a wide range of different experience levels that can accommodate MUNers of all skill levels. If this is your first time competing in Model UN, fret not! We have included a guide through the different genres of committees that you will encounter at DUMUNC (and at most Model UN tournaments below).
COMMITTEE STYLES:
THEME INFORMATION:
Committee themes have been chosen for 2024, and are available below listed by type.
POSITION PAPER INFORMATION:
Delegates in GA committees and Specialized committees will be required to submit a 1-page position paper on one of their committee's designated topics on or before the day of DUMUNC (April 5th). Topics will be announced when the background guides for each committee are sent to registered delegations (on or before March 18th). The background guides will also include information on how and where to submit position papers.
COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS:
What committees your delegation is assigned to will depend upon what registration window you sign up in (early, regular, or late), and the distribution of delegates you assign to each of the committee styles. Your assignments will be issued closer to the date of the conference after we receive your preferences.
We hope that this guide will be helpful in selecting what committees are most appealing to your delegation, and we eagerly await to host vibrant debate on all of them come April!
Sincerely,
Benji and Caitlin

COMMITTEE STYLES:
- General Assembly (GA): General Assembly committees most closely resemble real-world bodies of the United Nations. These committees are ideal for beginner MUN delegates or any who are passionate about the topics represented by the committees we have prepared. Delegates in the DISEC committee will compete in pairs, and delegates in the CSTD and WHO committees will compete solo, numbers permitting.
- Specialized Committee: Specialized committees follow many of the same rules as GA bodies, but they differ in ways that enable them to better mimic the (typically non-UN) body they represent. Delegates of all experience levels are encouraged to try their hand at these single-delegate committees!
- Crisis Committee: Crisis committees are fast-paced committees that incorporate delegate actions into a narrative that updates as the committee progresses. Joint crisis committees are two rival crisis committees that share the same topic, and compete against one another. These single-delegate committees typically feature more experienced delegates.

Crisis Committees
The Watergate Scandal
On July 17, 1972, a security guard named Frank Wills discovered a break-in at Washington D.C.'s Watergate office complex: home to the Democratic National Committee. The resulting turmoil undid the Nixon administration and caused a watershed moment in American politics, but that outcome was far from a sure thing. This committee will explore the before-and-after of that historic event, with delegates placed in the shoes of the Nixon campaign, the White House, the Congress, and even the burglars.

Bloody Sunday
After years of slumber, the working class of Russia has awoken. As protests and riots spread through St. Petersburg, Tsar Nicholas II must make difficult choices. Will he relinquish some of his authority, or strike down even harder? Delegates in this committee will adopt positions among the royal court, the protesters, the Orthodox church, and even the military. Power is up for grabs if you have the courage to take it...
